When Jimmy Hudson, CPA, CGMA, received the Kenneth W. Hurst Fellows Award at TXCPA’s Annual Meeting in June, it was a meaningful recognition of his commitment to supporting the future of the CPA profession. The award recognizes accounting professionals who have contributed $5,000 or more to AcctoFi within the past five years.A Principal at JHSH Consulting, LLC, Jimmy has also given his time and leadership to TXCPA Permian Basin and TXCPA, currently serving on the Leadership Council, Awards Committee and Nominations Council. He previously served as TXCPA Permian Basin Chapter President in 2014–15.

For Jimmy, supporting scholarships is personal. He received a scholarship while in college, which helped shape his desire to give back. “I think when you have received something, you have an obligation to give back,” he said. Mentors including Phil Davis and Larry Edgerton also influenced his involvement with TXCPA and his commitment to supporting the profession. His personal faith has further reinforced his desire to help others.

Jimmy believes established CPAs have a responsibility to invest in the next generation. As experienced professionals retire and the demand for CPAs continues, he says scholarships and mentorship can help students see a path into the profession. “We need to make sure we’re bringing people into the profession,” he said. He also encourages young professionals to get involved with their local chapter. “For those who may not have money, time is a valuable resource,” Jimmy said, emphasizing that volunteering is a great way to build relationships, develop professionally and give back.

Jimmy’s own path to becoming a CPA wasn’t always straightforward. He initially considered a career in academia while pursuing a graduate degree in finance, but ultimately recognized the importance of earning his CPA license for his professional goals. His advice to students considering the CPA path is simple: “It’s hard. It’s not easy. But it’s worth it.” He hopes scholarships can help students overcome some of the challenges along the way and ultimately “see a path to becoming a CPA.”

For Jimmy, the Kenneth W. Hurst Fellows Award represents more than a financial contribution. It reflects his belief that today’s CPAs have a responsibility to strengthen the profession for those who will follow. Whether through scholarships, mentorship or volunteer service, he encourages CPAs at every stage of their careers to find a way to give back.
